Angels and Demons

10 Oct 17

Angels and Demons – the first thing that comes to mind is the bestseller by Dan Brown. But have you ever thought that maybe angels and demons are not just mythical characters found in books or movies, but maybe be different forms of human behavior?

There are times when we bring out our angelic side and that’s how we hope we remain- calm and peaceful both from within and outside. But isn’t demon a fallen angel? Emotions of greed, hate, jealously are all characteristics of demons and unfortunately of humans too.

Every day we make a choice – to be an angel or a demon.

MMTMC is giving you that choice as well. But in a fun and engaging way! Make a choice to be an angel (by wearing white) or a demon (by wearing black) on the coming Friday, 6 October 2017, 7-10pm and do accessorize yourself in the best possible way while you make your choice clear. It is the one and maybe the only time where no one will judge you based on your choice.

Be that angel or that demon that you have always wished to be as you enjoy fiery speeches and intuitive evaluations and unleash your harmlessly devilish side with the table topics sessions.

There’ll also be a photo booth set up for that evening! So be sure to dress up in your most angelic and devilish looks this coming Friday.

See you there!

Divided by Countries, United by Music

10 Oct 17

“Op, op, op, op
Oppa Gangnam Style
Gangnam Style!”

You surely sang that in the tune, didn’t you? Even though you may not have understood what the lyrics meant!

That is the power of Music. In a world divided by culture, beliefs and language, one thing that we can always depend on to bridge the gaps is Music. More than just the chords and riffs, it is the emotional content packed behind these melodies that make music so universally relatable.

Music has far-reaching effects to our everyday lives. It accompanies us as we pen down our Toastmaster scripts, you can use it to soothe yourself before a presentation or you can even use it as a tool for your speeches itself! No matter which culture we are from, everyone has their own relationship with music.

So to all the Beyonces and Ed Sheerans in the house, it’s time to turn the MMTMC Chapter meeting to an in-house musical extravaganza! Let us come together to celebrate the oneness of Music that goes way beyond boundaries on 22nd September 2017, 7pm-10pm, with our chapter meeting “Divided by Countries, United by Music”. Witness amazing speeches, insightful evaluations and fun table topics and sway to the rhythms of happiness and positivity.

See you!

Reminder:

On 23rd September 2017, our brave contestants from MMTMC are going to represent our Club in the Area D1-D3 Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contest. Contest starts at 9am, at The Plaza, 7500A Beach Road #12-324, Singapore 199591.

Come on down to witness the best speakers from each clubs, as we compete to see who would represent our area in the Division D Contest happening on 14 October 2017!

Meet our Mentor: Brian Chye, DTM

8 Aug 17

Meet Brian Chye, DTM, an MMTMC member who is now serving Toastmasters community as the Area Director. Find out more about what he thinks of becoming a mentor at MMTMC.

  1. Tell us a little more about yourself and what do you do?

I am a Procurement Professional working at the National University of Singapore. My role involves supporting the procurement process, maintaining compliance and ensuring value for money for our purchases. My hobbies include reading, gaming, travelling, and of course Club Hopping as a Toastmaster. I am looking forward to many fruitful years ahead meeting like-minded fellows and continue my journey in our movement.

  1. What has been your most memorable experience in MMTMC so far?

There are many memorable experience in MMTMC till date. I am especially humbled and inspired by our team harmony in preparing for the Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contest in 2016 where I was the Organizing Chair.

  1.      How has being a toastmaster changed your life?

Having the trust of our members, taking on greater responsibility and delivering the results have help to make me a better person. While I have joined toastmaster to improve my public speaking, I have gained acceptance into the MMTMC family, grow as an individual, stay grounded and work well in a team setting.

  1. What motivates you to take up a role as a mentor?

I hope to work towards supporting our members and helping them to experience the MMTMC culture, to continue their journey of growth.

  1. What is your top de-stressing activity?

I enjoyed gaming; it helps me in de-stressing. Reading the newspaper comes a close second.

  1. If you can invite anyone for a dinner, who will you invite and why?

There are too many people whom I would love to invite to dinner. If I can only choose one, I would choose my grandmother whom I was especially close to. While she has left us quite some time ago, her imprints on me have left a lasting impression, I would not be the person I am today without her support and it would be wonderful to have dinner again.

The Power of Conviction

6 Aug 17

SINGAPORE IS OUT!!!

When Straits Times announced it on their headlines, it plunged the lives of Singaporeans into a deep void of uncertainty. On the 9th August 1965, Singapore became an independent nation against our will, and was soon faced with piling adversities for a young nation.

However, our fore fathers did not budge. In the face of societal, economic and military challenges, our fore fathers fought it with diligence at hand and conviction at heart. It was with that belief and willpower that they built the Singapore that we see today – a nation not meant to be.

This Chapter Meeting, in conjunction with National Day, let us all put on our favourite RED or WHITE outfit, and unite as one Money Mastery tocelebrate how with noble conviction, our fore fathers have transformed this sleepy fishing village into a global financial hub.

Meet our Mentor: Candrika Adri Tjo, CC, CL

12 Jul 17

Today, let us meet Candrika Adri Tjo, CC, CL, Club President 2016/17, who has been with Money Mastery Singapore Toastmasters Club (MMTMC) for more than seven years. As the first Runner Up of Division D Humorous Speech Contest in year 2013 and 2015, Candrika believes that nurturing others and seeing them grow are more important than winning a ribbon. Learn more about her story here.

  1. Tell us a little more about yourself and what do you do?

I am an architectural graduate with more than seven years of experience working in architectural industry in Singapore. I have been a toastmaster since 2012 and still love learning and listening to stories from fellow members.  I call myself an ambivert, aspiring entrepreneur, and shaved-ice lover. I believe that communication skill is the highest compounding skill to master.

  1. What has been your most memorable experience in MMTMC so far?

There are too many memorable experiences with MMTMC. I love the camaraderie the most, like how we always come in a big group supporting fellow members at area/ division/ district contest, as a club.

  1.      How has being a toastmaster changed your life?

Since I embarked the journey of being a toastmaster, my personal life, career, and many other areas have improved tremendously. I am a better communicator, a better leader, and a better person compared to myself seven years ago.

  1. What motivates you to take up a role as a mentor?

Seeing fellow members improving is a meaningful experience that is more satisfying than winning a ribbon. And I find that I learn much more when I mentor members.

  1. What is your top de-stressing activity?

Reading books, doing outdoor activities, learning new skills, hanging out with friends, traveling, journaling, practicing mindfulness.

  1. If you can invite anyone for a dinner, who will you invite and why?

Ahok, being the only Jakarta’s Governor who has the ability and courage to make a difference to Indonesian’s politic and bureaucracy. I wish I could pick up his brain and learn one or two things from him about leadership and life.

In the upcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM), Candrika Adri Tjo, CC will lead the current Exco team to summarise the things that they have done, how the funds are spent and how the new membership fee can continue to fund our coming exciting programmes.

Afterwards, our in-coming President, Tan Qing Lin will introduce his new Exco team.

Our AGM is strictly for members only. For non-members, our next chapter meeting will be on 14th of July. Please stay tuned to our FB page for more updates.

Meet our Mentor: Raymond Ee, ACB, CL

24 Jun 17

Meet Raymond Ee, ACB, CL, one of our mentors, a past president, and club advisor for operations management. Raymond was the President of MMTMC in the year 2013-2014 and has been a Toastmaster for more than seven years. As a mentor, Raymond loves to share his knowledge on how to be an effective and impactful presenter.

  1. Tell us a little more about yourself and what do you do?

As a certified Business Continuity Management (BCM) management consultant and avid evangelist for corporate adoption of good BCM practices, I have been invited to speak and share my vision in numerous BCM related seminars and conferences across Asia. I believe that Business Continuity is everybody’s responsibility and all socially responsible corporations should treat this seriously. I love conducting trainings in my industry; always aiming to make the complicated simple. I hope to help the younger toastmasters to be more confident and competent in public speaking.

Before I became a management consultant, I was a General Manager for two factories of 1000 employees each in China for 8 years.

  1. What has been your most memorable experience in MMTMC so far?

It has to be joining the various contests in MMTMC. We have a lot of awesome speakers and the competition is intense. You will get that quantum leap in public speaking when you prepare seriously in the contests.

  1.      How has being a toastmaster changed your life?

At the age of 40 when I returned from China and joined Toastmasters in 2012, I have almost zero management presentation and training experience. Since then, this platform has greatly accelerated the progress of my career in management consulting and training in the Organizational Resilience industry. Cutently, I am one of the top trainers in the company and a well-recognized speaker/facilitator in regional conferences.

  1. What motivates you to take up a role as a mentor?

I love to teach and share my knowledge. One of my strengths is the effective use of visual aids in presentations. One is never too young nor too old to become an influential speaker and presenter.

  1. What is your top de-stressing activity?

Drinking wine, watch Netflix, watching soccer, road biking, playing with my three cats and listening to well-crafted speeches from my life partner, Michell.

  1. If you can invite anyone for dinner, who will you invite and why?

I would like to invite my older self 30 years in the future, and ask him to mentor me.
